The Main screens & individual controls collection explains how SmoothPay’s main screens are structured and how the individual tabs, controls, settings, and fields within those screens work.
The guides are separated by purpose so you can quickly find either a broad explanation of a screen or more detailed information about a particular area within it.
How the guides are organised
Where applicable, each main SmoothPay screen is supported by several types of guide.
Screen overview
A screen overview provides a fundamental introduction to the screen and explains the main areas of functionality available within it.
It also directs you to the more detailed guides available for that screen.
Screen layout
A screen layout guide explains how the screen is physically organised, including the main columns, panels, buttons, and other controls used to navigate or interact with it.
Use the layout guide when you need to understand where something is located on the screen.
Related processes
A related processes guide links the screen to the broader payroll tasks and workflows that make use of it.
These process guides explain how to complete a task, while the screen guides explain how the screen and its controls work.
Individual tabs and controls
Where a screen contains separate tabs, panels, or significant controls, these may have their own guides.
These guides provide more detailed information about the options, settings, fields, and functionality available within that specific area of the screen.
Options, settings and fields
Many of the individual screen and tab guides include an Options, settings and fields section.
Each item may use the following definitions to explain how it works.
Type
Type identifies what kind of control or field you are working with.
For example, an item may be a:
text field - enter text directly into the field
dropdown - click the dropdown menu to see the available options
checkbox - mark the checkbox to activate the setting
date field - enter a date as dd.mm.yyyy
button - clicking the button performs the related action
read-only value - display only
This helps explain how you interact with the item.
Purpose
Purpose explains what the option, setting, or field is used for and what information or behaviour it controls.
Dependency
Dependency explains whether the item depends on another setting, selection, payroll configuration, or other condition.
For example, a field may only become available when another option is enabled.
Where there is no relevant dependency, this definition may not be included.
Other functionality
Other functionality explains any additional confirmed behaviour associated with the item that is useful to understand but does not fit within its basic purpose or dependency.
Where there is no additional functionality to explain, this definition may not be included.
Making changes
Where a guide includes a Making changes section, it explains how the options and fields within that area can be edited.
The exact controls available may differ between screens, but the individual guide will explain the relevant method where required.
Jurisdiction-specific differences
SmoothPay supports multiple payroll jurisdictions.
Some screens, tabs, options, settings, or fields may therefore differ depending on the jurisdiction configured for your payroll.
The guides explain the common functionality wherever possible and identify jurisdiction-specific behaviour where it is relevant.
Using these guides alongside process guides
The guides in Main screens & individual controls are primarily designed to explain what is on a screen and how its individual controls work.
If you are trying to complete a broader payroll task, follow the related process guide where one is available. These guides bring together the relevant screens and controls into the order required to complete that task.
